How many t8 fluorescent lights do i need for my shop?

I have a 40x50 ft. shop with 16 ft. high celings. We are putting the t8 8 ft fluorescent light fixtures up. And i dont know how many to put in.

1. Call a professional electrical contractor to do the work they can plan and install the whole project faster, easier and probably cheaper than you can do DIY. Basically you need enough lights to throw usable light throughout the shop.
2. Depends. How many footcandles of light is required? The type and style of reflectors and/or light diffusers along with the color of the floors, walls and ceiling will all have an effect on the number of fixtures necessary. You can always temporarily hang fixtures in a small section to get a feel for the proper amount. At any rate plan on wiring zones or quads that are switched for 1/3, 2/3 or full lighting. at the flick of a couple wall switches. If you can afford some skylights, 5% of the ceiling area is a good start. Squido.
