Why use stranded wire in light fixtures? I need to rewire a ceiling fixture where the sockets and some of the wires have deteriorated because of heat, even though we nexer use more than the recommended max 60 watt bulbs. The only wire I could find in my shop is Romex, which, of course, is solid wire, so I have to make a trip to Home Depot. I'll do that, but it started me wondering, why do we use solid wire in walls, but only stranded in fixtures? Is it because it's more flexible? Does it make better electrical connections with wire nuts?
Does anybody know if it is possible to buy replacement components for halogen light fixtures? I have 2 halogen light fixtures in my kitchen. They are the old type of fixtures, the ones for which you have to remove the glass heat shield in order to replace the actual light bulb. Last night when I was attempting to replace one of the bulbs, I accidentally dropped one of the glass plates and it broke. I don't want to buy a whole new fixture, just the protective glass, but I have been unable to find any replacement fixture components in the local shops. Does anyone know of a store/website that deals with this kind of thing? Thanks all!
We are selling our house and I have a question about "fixtures and fittings"? When we moved in I saw the previous owners leave with the loft ladder. Not a great issue, I replaced it with one from a DIY shop. It cost about £30. Now the house I am moving to doesn't have one. The fixtures and fittings list we filled in for their solicitors, didn't detail a loft ladder, so it's not part of the sale. Can I take it with me? Or am I being incredibly petty?
Is the Automation of a tool design shop feasible or not?? How do I assemble a shop light? I've purchased a 24" T12 strip/shop light that takes 20 watt bulbs. It has a variety of wires colored yellow, white and black. There is no on or off switch. How do I make this thing work? What other tools do I need? Is there a light fixture product on the market like this that is already fully assembled (minus the bulbs, I can put those in lol! )?
Wiring fluorescent shop lights with plug? I bought six 48" fluorescent shop light fixtures for a homemade automotive paint booth. I got them from Lowe's. They had two styles of the fluorescent light fixtures. One that came with a three prong plug and one that needed to be wired. Oddly the fixtures with a plug where $9.99 and the fixtures that need to be wired where $19.99. I want to wire all six fixtures to one light switch, But could not justify paying twice as much for the same light minus a plug. I figured It would be easy to cut the plugs off and Straight wire them to a switch. But I can't figure out what the wires are. It has three wires going to a three prong plug. The main wire is flat and it is a series of three wires wires side by side. They are all white in color. One wire is smooth with the specs wrote on it. The other is solid white with four grooves. And the last wire is in the middle and is just solid white. How can I tell what wire is the "Hot" wire with out a multimeter? BTW: I thought about just wiring new plug sockets for the lights and putting the plugs on a switch, But I would much rather have them wired straight in. It will look cleaner, and I don't have to buy new boxes or new conduit. thanks for the help! The light fixtures are in cased in a sealed box's with an acrylic front. Their is no danger when using them. I have 10 other open fluorescent fixtures in my shop and I have painted approx 1 car per week for 7 years now. Ive sprayed 100's of gallons of paint and never once had any issues with flash fires.. Fluorescent bulbs don't get hot, and an electric spark is not enough to set off paint fumes. HVLP systems and the amount of air filtration leaves little to no danger when using fluorescent fixtures for painting. Mythbusters did a show where they filled a small room with 75% gasoline fumes by using an automotive spray gun, and they did everything they could to get an electric spark to start a fire. And it never did. They finally got a fire after they let the wire get so hot that it melted the insulation off and was glowing red. Paint is not falmeable enough to start a flash fire. Ive used ready heaters around painting with out any flare up's. Im not worried about lights.

Hi, My lease is ending this month and I am fighting with the landlord...They say i need to give up my improvements (added walk in fridge, stove, and exhaust fan. Also added nice customer counter. Why do my 48" Florescent Shop Lights keep Burning out? I have 6 of those 48" florescent shop lights in my garage/workshop. Especially in cold weather they seem to work intermittently and I find the bulbs (tubes) burn out more often than I would expect. (temp in garage 55 to 60 deg F in winter) Is there a solution to this problem? I tried replacing the lights fixtures (they are cheap enough), but to no avail....same issues.
Trying to install a kitchen light. Not sure which wire is positve and which is negative? Its a very old fixture over the kitchen sink. The pre existing fixture was an old shop light. When I removed it the wires were not connected. I have 3 old wires... 2 are the same color and the third is red. I tested the wires with one of those little pen probes and the red wire is hot and one of the same colored wires is hot. The new fixtures has a black and white color with the ground. Is the old red wire to match with the new white wire?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Whats involved in setting up a shop business? I want to open a shop - something like a £1 discount store. Just one shop to start with. I've checked out a couple of local commercial properties, annual rental rates are approx. £18,000. It's my first business so I'm literally starting from scratch - 1 thing I will no doubt probably need is 6 months rent up front. Things I have thought about: 6 months rent up front fixture, fittings new shop front labour stock Do I pay council business rates up front or on a monthly basis? I've seen a figure for £9,500. Is that per annum? Surely not monthly! The listing was quite unclear. Thanks in advance everyone - would prefer personal comments and experience rather than web links!
Where do you find deep discounts in Cincinnati area? I'm looking for places to find SUPER discounts on things in the Cincinnati area. It can be for anything...food, housewares, fixtures, clothes, anything. Also, it can be in big quantities too...like restaurant supply places. I'm just looking for new places to shop!
What is are affordable places to buy bedroom furniture, lamps, etc.? I'm redoing my entire room in coffee shop colors (Caramel, beige, chocolate brown, etc.) and am having trouble finding furniture for it. It needs to be affordable obviously, but stylish or sophisticated isn't bad either. I DON'T want kiddy firniture. Places that offer bedframes, throws, pillows, lighting fixtures, rugs, chairs, desks, and other such things please.
I've seen a local shop/business for sale. What questions should I ask, and how can I raise the money? A small shop in my local town has a sign in the window saying 'Profitable Business For Sale, Apply Within'. The people who own it also own the Butchers next door, and they're selling that business for £25,000. The Butchers is bigger and probably more profitable, so I'm assuming the business I'm looking at will be somewhere in the region of £20,000. The shop has been there for years and seems to employ a couple of assistants, so I'm assuming it must be profitable. I can't see it being hit too hard should financial times get even worse either, as it's a discount store and seems to have many regular customers, as well as a roaring summer trade, as it's a seaside town. The store is on a High Street. It looks like it would need a little bit of updating, but it's mostly cosmetic stuff that'd be easilly fixed with a lick of paint, a new sign and some new fixtures/fittings. I wouldn't need to do this straight away, as the business is obviously making money how it currently is. I have almost 10 years of retail experience, as well as some useful business and accounting skills I picked up when I had an office job for a while last year. I think the business and the leasehold are for sale. My questions are as follows: 1) When I call them, what would be some good questions to ask? 2) What would be the easiest way for me to raise the money? I could potentially raise a deposit if needed. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. The sign says they're selling due to retirement.

How do T8 fluorescent fixtures perform in the cold? I'm wiring a guys shop and he's only heating it with wood whenever he needs to work in it. He wants fluorescent strips as lighting and the first thing that came to mind was he needed high output fiixtures, so they would work in the cold. Today I called an electrical wholesaler for some prices and he told me a regular T-8 fixture will work fine down to -20C, or -4F. His shop won't likely dip below that level, buy i'm not sure how well it will work. I know T-12's are horrible in the cold Thanks
Are you bound to a proposal that you signed with a contractor? I am wanting to shop around a little more after considering the steep price that a contractor wants to replace a toilet, sink, sink fixtures, bathtub surround, bath and shower fixtures, and reflooring for $4800. If it is too steep, am I bound by the proposal I signed or can I call it off before they begin work???

How do I cut tin on a Lantern? I bought some really cool lanterns at a shop. They have glass panes in the doors and are constructed of tin as far as I can tell. I want to cut holes in the bottoms of them to put in a single light bulb fixture and turn them into bedside lamps. Does any one know how to cut tin with chemicals or a possibly a dremel tool? I don't need anything heavy duty here, the glass will shatter.
Shop Light/Fluorescent in kitchen help?!? I have a light fixture in my kitchen that is a shop light type deal with fluorescent bulbs. The problem I have is it won't turn on properly. I have to flip the switch and wait about 10 minutes, then flip the switch off then back on for the light to come on. If I replace the bulbs it will work fine for a couple months and then go right back to the same thing. I thought these bulbs are suppose to last longer than that?? What could the problem be? I am by no means an electrician..
I am looking for an engineer to give us the equation for hold down clamp force.? I work in a small machine shop and we are having a heated debate. I am building a fixture and have gone through pains to put my bolt points low on the fixture, thinking that the less the length of the bolts will make the fixture more rigid and less likely to move. My partner says that the length of bolt has no effect on the amount of force required to move the fixture out of position, that friction is the force holding the fixture and length of bolt doesn't matter much. Thank you for taking the time to read this, any information would be helpful.
Light Fixture Point To Ceiling - Enough Light? I am shopping for a kitchen light fixture that would be over a kitchen table. I notice a fair amount of light fixtures point the light upwards rather than down. My concern is that a fixture point light up would not provide enough light. The fixtures I am looking are typically 120 to 200 watts incandscant. My kitchen table will be about 7 feet long.
If a house seller buys new appliances, fixtures, and remodeling materials, is it a concession? Suppose a house seller and buyer make a deal where the seller will pay for new appliances, fixtures, remodeling materials, etc.. First, the buyer gives the seller a big deposit, such as $10,000, as earnest money to buy the house. Then, the seller and buyer go shopping together, and spend the $10,000 on the new stuff. The buyer then does the work of installing everything and doing all the remodeling work, before even getting a mortgage. Then, with the new stuff installed, they get the house appraised, at a higher value because of the new stuff, and the buyer applies for a mortgage based on that higher value. The question is whether the buyer has to inform the mortgage company that the new stuff was purchased that way. In other words, is it a concession, or just a pre-sale home improvement? The mortgage company is informed that the buyer has paid the seller a $10,000 earnest-money deposit, of course, but is there any need to also tell them how the $10,000 was spent?

Had to go to home depot and get a galvanized plug for a galvanized T that hooked up to a pvc pipe. Cut the pvc pipe off and will deal with that later. Not what I wanted to do on my day off.
Looking for a very specific kind of exfoliating face cloth.? I bought these at KMart years ago and can't find them in any store. Have you seen these for sale anywhere recently? They're standard size wash cloths, with one surface being a very thin white terry cloth, bonded to the reverse side which is a rough kind of foam material [sold in assorted pastels]. The corners are rounded off. They exfoliate nicely when used with a facial cleanser. They used to come folded into quarters in small clear plastic bags, on peg hooks at the corners of fixtures in cosmetics departments in discount stores. I've tried Wal-Mart, CVS, Bed Bath & Beyond, eBay and specialty shops with no luck. I don't want a substitute product...ONLY this item. (This is NOT like a Vic cloth.) Thanks!
How do I fix flourescent shop lights that are dim? I have a two tube 96" flourescent fixture. I replaced the ballast about 6 months ago (rapid start, not a cheapie) and I have checked the tubes to be sure they are good. Now the bulbs will not light all the way. They are dim and you can see the current swirling within the tubes. The guy at the supply house said if the ballast is good and the tubes are good, it must be the lampholders. How do you check the ballast to see if it is good or bad? Sorry, they are single pin bulbs, not HO.
Trying to install a kitchen light. Not sure which wire is positve and which is negative? Its a very old fixture over the kitchen sink. The pre existing fixture was an old shop light. What type of light should I use? I wanted to know what type of light should I use. I have used this "aquarium" light bulb I bought from Home depot which does a decent job. Whenever I go to the fish store I see that their lights are much much brighter and bring out the colors of the fish more. I DO NOT wanna spend more than 100 bucks on lighting equipment or bulbs. The question is: Do you know of a CHEAP light fixture/bulb that I could use? I am using a standard shop light fixture right now with the "aquarium" bulbs. Please include price, brand, and where I can get it at. Sorry, I have a 72gal bowfront

advice on home remodel? This is a pretty broad question. I am doing an addition to my home by adding a bedroom, full bath, and entertainment room. This is my first time with this sort of project. Any recommendations are appreciated. I will take these into consideration when researching and shopping for these items. Thanks
Choosing an Architect and writing a business plan.? I am currently trying to raise capital for a new retail shop I am opening, and need to write a business plan for banks and potential investors. However, the fixtures and construction of the new store are going to be the biggest cost, and I don't know how to estimate it. I am going to lease a space but will need to buy new fixtures for the store. Are architects willing to consult for this type of thing? How much does it cost? I am starting a consumer electronics store and need about 10000sq ft of space or more, with 8000 showroom and 2000 warehouse. I know there are a wide range of costs and options invovled, but any advice or estimate will be well received.
Should I buy this business? Is it a good deal? I'm thinking of buying a business that is $800,000 that (nets)$270,000 just under 3 times earnings. The business is a high end smoke shop in Toronto. why does my t8 light fixture keep turning off after 90mins of being on? Its Instant light so no on/off switch.? The light fixture is a shop light. It holds 2 t8 48'' bulbs and is plugged in to a power strip. It is a 32w light. The power strip also has 3 other connections plugged in, but that what its for right? Anyway, the light turns on when plugged in and stays on but after about 90 minutes it turns off. I'm basically concerned because if it would be too much for the power strip it would fry the strip right? or is the shop light turning off by itself like a precaution built into the ballasts? it came with chains and hooks to hang the fixture. It has a fan to ventilate the room. Do i need another fan to ventilate the room better?? I have tried unplugging one of the cables from the power strip so now theres a total of 3 cables connected to the strip. Hopefully this fixes the problem.
what does this excerpt from a book meen? The old counter, shelves, and other fixtures of the little shop remained just as he had left them. It used to be affirmed, that the dead shop-keeper, in a white wig, a faded velvet coat, an apron at his waist, and his ruffles carefully turned back from his wrists, might be seen through the chinks of the shutters, any night of the year, ransacking his till, or poring over the dingy pages of his day-book. From the look of unutterable woe upon his face, it appeared to be his doom to spend eternity in a vain effort to make his accounts balance.—Ch. 1 from The House of Seven Gables by Nathanie Hawthorne

What to wear? Okay so im starting this new job, it is a salesman job at a small business for lighting and fixtures, very nice expensive things for homes mainly. So the thing is im not sure what to wear to work there are no men salesmen from what I have seen and the women dress fairly nice, skirt/nice slacks/nice women dress attire i suppose. My question is what should I wear? A tie would be to much at this place I believe, I want to stand out to the customer but not overdue it and look like a overdressed moron.
